There was greater RFE, and greater passive force enhancement (PFE) at long vs. short muscle lengths in both groups. Fascicle length and pennation angle changes of the vastus lateralis following stretch did not contribute to RFE in either group. The stretch amplitude may not have been large enough to engage sufficient passive force transmitting elements which has been shown previously to contribute to greater RFE in older adults.

Decay of force transients following active stretch is slower in older than young men: support for a structural mechanism contributing to residual force enhancement in old age.

Following active lengthening of muscle, force reaches an isometric steady state above that which would be achieved for a purely isometric contraction at the same muscle length. This fundamental property of muscle, termed "residual force enhancement (RFE)," cannot be predicted by the force-length relationship, and is unexplained by the cross-bridge theory of muscle contraction. Recently, we show...

Enhanced force production in old age is not a far stretch: an investigation of residual force enhancement and muscle architecture

In older adults, isometric force production is enhanced following a voluntary lengthening contraction when compared with isometric force produced at the same muscle length without a prior lengthening contraction. This phenomenon is termed residual force enhancement (RFE), and appears to be related to the age-related maintenance of eccentric (ECC) strength. However, it is unknown whether age-rel...

The Association Between Knee Extensor Force Steadiness, Force Accuracy, and Mobility in Older Adults Who Have Fallen.

BACKGROUND Older adults often experience limited mobility, lower extremity muscle weakness, and increased fall risk. Furthermore, when older adults perform tasks that require control of submaximal force, impairments in their ability to maintain steady and accurate force output have been reported. Such problems may be related to deteriorating levels of mobility, particularly in older adults who ...

Biomonitoring the skeletal muscle metabolic dysfunction in knee osteoarthritis in older adults: Is Jumpstart Nutrition® Supplementation effective?

Background: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of Jumpstart Nutrition® dietary supplement (JNDS) for enhancing the skeletal muscle metabolism and function of older adults with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) by evaluating the biomarkers of aberrant levels of serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-10 (IL-10), C-reactive protein (CRP), creatine kinase-muscle (CK-MM), and aldol...

مقایسه درصد فازهای استقرار و نوسان و نیروی واکنش زمین بین جوانان و سالمندان حین راه رفتن با سرعت های مختلف

Objective: comparing the effects of gait at different speeds on spatiotemporal and kinetic parameters can result in better perception of gait pattern differences between young and older adults. Thus the purpose of this study was to compare the percentage of gait stance and swing phases and vertical ground reaction force between young and older adults during walking with different speeds. Metho...
